The most amazing innovation in music found at TechWorld 2011 The AlphaSphere... click image above and watch the video...
Knowing that most folk who visit this page will scan the top and then move on, I brought the best bit of the exhibition front and centre... the Alphasphere. Adam and his pals have invented this great new musical instrument, inspired by the reality that most of today's digital instruments are based on traditional instruments ie the electric keyboard = the piano, a hammer on a string. The Alphashpere is unique and fit for purpose, 42 panels that can be uniquely programmed for the individual artist... the rest will be music to your ears ;)
Click the image above and go check it out... especially if you are big into music and have a few quid to help them move it on... Simon Cowell, helping this UK innovation move forward might earn you a Knighthood... what do you get the guy that has everything?
As to the rest of the event...
Got a tweet from @ukti_ict asking @2020socialmedia Hi. What did you think of #TechWorld?
It looks like they started following me yesterday (Friday) and then tweeted the question... I started following them on Tuesday evening as I prepared for the event which they were organising. Glad to see they had their finger on this instant response mechanism's pulse! Mind you, twitter is so 2010...
Ed Vaizey MP, Minister for Culture, Communications & Creative Industries, shared how if he could move the number of business exporting from 1 in 5 to 1 in 4, that would add £36 billion to the coffers.
Ed had been advised that the Olympics would generate £20 billion and John Armet, Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority shared how 67% of the money being spent on setting things up was going to SME businesses. SME in government speak is up to 250 employees... I'd like to know how many of these businesses were micro business, 1 & 2 man operations.
Listening to Nick Baird, CEO of UKTI, open the event on Wednesday morning, he said that 27% of UK jobs were ICT related… Tech City, an area of London around Shoreditch had started with a 15 companies a couple of years ago and now was 500 companies strong… sound to me if you’re in the tech space you need to go and see what they’ve got cooking… click image and watch their video showreel...
I was a little more concerned when I heard that they had teamed up with Yell to look after the business community side of things… reading their reports they are £2.6 BILLION in debt… I’d rather see the government supporting local business groups…
It is the energy of local people that makes things happen… great example in Basingstoke is the M3 Job Club run by an inspiring chap called Richard Thayer… I’d ask him what he thought first Nick before you make the same mistake again (if Yell is to be the new Business Link).
Lunch was enjoyed watching a football match between two sets of robots... I wonder if in 50 years we'll be watching Rooney Robots playing in the Premiership... only a couple of million each, could be way cheaper for the clubs!
So what did I think of Techworld 2011... Interesting to see a few innovations... find out that TechCity exists and would make for a great day out... not sure if the Indians will need much of the consultancy I can offer when they have access to folk with much smaller mortgages... and please look to those who are doing great things in the local communities before you give more millions to corporate organisations with shareholder driven agendas... like you did with Business Link and look set to do with Yell...
Please find the Richards and Adams of the UK and give them the money...
Thank you.

Response just in (23rd November) from UKTI...
Jon,
Just wanted to explain more about the tie up with Yell. You're right about the need to help small businesses. That's what the partnership with Yell is all about.
Yell won an open competition to deliver the Open to Export service.
The vision is to create a platform that provides support to SMEs around export. That support will be in the form of peer to peer advice, support from intemediaries (Banks, lawyers etc)and also UKTI.
The pilot platform will be launched as a beta in spring. Also you may want to check with Yell re nationality of their ownership.
Hope this helps.
