Shell Springboard opens for entries

The race is on for Green Entrepreneurs to capture the carbon pound, as Shell Springboard opens for entries

£40,000 awards open for small businesses with big ideas for tackling climate change

Small businesses with big ideas to tackle climate change are being urged to compete for awards of up to £40,000 each, as the Shell Springboard programme opens for its fifth year.

This year’s awards launch against the backdrop of the Government’s Low Carbon Transition Plan announcement, committing the UK to a 34% cut in CO2 emissions by 2020. Shell Springboard is urging green SMEs to capitalise on this commercial opportunity to tackle climate change and apply for a financial boost from the scheme.

James Smith, Chairman of Shell UK, said: “Re-engineering the energy system opens new horizons for UK industry. If you have a great business idea for tackling climate change, apply to Shell Springboard.”

Shell Springboard offers a financial boost for UK businesses with compelling ideas for tackling climate change. These must be ideas which:
  • Will lead to greenhouse gas reductions

  • Are commercially viable

  • Are innovative
£320,000 is on offer in awards of £20,000 or £40,000. Last year awards were made to nine businesses from across the UK.

The deadline for 2009 entries is 6th November 2009.

Full details and an online application form can be found at

Last year’s winner was father and son duo Dr Tom Ma (67) and Jonathan Ma (28), of Ma (Innovation) 2T4 Ltd. They won the Shell Springboard award with their Supercharger Air Hybrid system for car engines, which uses the energy created from braking to boost downsized engines, leading to a more powerful drive and reducing carbon emissions. The hybrid car using this technology could produce a substantial fuel efficiency improvement, with up to a 40 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions compared with a standard car.

The pair are currently using the Shell Springboard award to develop a simulation and hope to take it to the world’s largest car manufacturers.
